The last editions of ‘VerdeOlympics’ in Brava and Santo Antão
PRESS RELEASE
Praia, Cabo Verde · Monday, 20 June 2016
SportImpact and the Cabo Verde Olympic Committee
organized on Saturday, June 4, in Brava and Santo Antão islands
two simultaneous editions of VerdeOlympics
SportImpact and the Cabo Verde Olympic Committee organized the last two editions of VerdeOlympics, completing all the inhabited islands in two months. Benefiting 311 workshop’s participants and more than 5000 kids with 17 sports available on average, in each event. The objective is that all the 311 workshop’s participants become empowered and “pay it forward” by teaching others what they have learned. Remember that Participants of São Nicolau already replicated what they have learned twice in different locations, multiplying the VerdeOlympics’ effect and benefiting more than 1500 extra kids.
The next challenge is a VerdeOlympics event at national scale organized solely by all the 311 alumni in their regions, to commemorate the Olympic Day (the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894), next Saturday, 25th of June. Stay tuned to this empowerment test!
Over 1300 children and youngsters experienced more than 20 different sports in Brava and Santo Antão islands. The event in Santo Antão was covered by Cabo Verde national television (RTC). Press here to see the video. For complete photo albums press here (Brava) and here (Santo Antão).
These events were co-organized with 64 graduates of two 5-day workshops “Sport Administration, with major in Organization of Sport Events”. During the workshop the participants were stimulated by SportImpact´s facilitators to empower themselves to pursue their projects and dreams instead of just waiting for external support. Inspired by Peace and Sport’s Adapted Sport Manual, they built sport equipment for the event from local materials and recycled garbage, overcoming the lack of official (and expensive) equipment.
