Sport For Life II – Consolidate and scale up to remote areas in Timor-Leste

SportImpact is implementing phase II of Sport for Life in Timor-Leste with support from UNESCO Jakarta.  The project helps youth to become change-makers, empowered to take responsibility for their lives and the world. SportImpact’s approach engages all relevant stakeholders collaboratively to use the power of sport as a tool for inclusion of underprivileged communities, providing opportunities for human development in remote areas of Timor-Leste, and bringing people together, building connections around common interests and goals, thus contributing to peace and healing of wounds from past conflicts and violence.

In 2015 SportImpact started implementing a Sports for Development Initiative through the Sport for Life project: a series of workshops in all municipalities of Timor-Leste, empowering the youth to develop solutions to their needs and dreams.

After targeting municipalities in 2015, in 2016 SportImpact is targeting sub-municipalities. To maintain a focus on local ownership, development and sustainability, we follow a gradual empowerment strategy, where over time the project is handed over to locals.  In 2016 we are training facilitators from all municipalities in Timor-Leste, through a train-the-trainer ‘Sport for Life Youth Leadership Camp’, organized in Dili from July 4th to 16th, and then will support them in replicating the initiative around the country. These trained facilitators will take Sport for Life to the sub-municipality level. In each sub-municipality they will run the one-week Sport for Life initiative: a five-day workshop to build the capacity of the local youth and sport leaders to organize sport events, followed by a one-day multi-sport event, co-organized with workshop graduates and with as many local groups and organizations as possible. The event aims to include all members of the community, especially hundreds of kids from nearby schools.

SportImpact thanks UNESCO Jakarta for providing financial support to make the phase II of Sport for Life viable. SportImpact and UNESCO are working together to codify the approach and lessons from this project in order to disseminate it around the world, encouraging interested parties to get in touch for collaboration.

SportImpact also benefits from support from and collaboration with Peace and Sport, MOVE, Sport Dili e Benfica, Marie Stopes International, and other organizations who are contributing to the Sport for Life Youth Leadership Camp.

SportImpact is actively looking for partners and sponsors, and invites all NGOs to share their relevant messages in the Sport for Life events, taking advantage of hundreds of kids having fun and being receptive to new messages and activities.
