SportImpact gathers hundreds of kids in Dili to celebrate the
International Day of Sport for Peace and Development

On Saturday, March 28^th, SportImpact celebrated the International Day of Sport for Peace and Development with a multi-sport event at the Dili Municipal Stadium, in Timor-Leste.

Hundreds of children and youth from Dili schools, as well as dozens of adults, could try for free 12 different sports and activities: athletics, badminton, basketball, football, gymnastics, karate, kempo, silat, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball and zumba.

In statements to the press, Nuno Delicado, SportImpact director, explained that the main objective of the event was to promote sport as a tool for human development and for promoting peace. “This was a historical event in Timor-Leste. Never before had so many sport activities been gathered in the same place. It is an innovative project even at global level. Activities were not competitive, there were no winners nor prizes, thus promoting sport for all and motivating people to sample and perhaps start practicing new sports”.

Showing that goodwill, collaboration and determination make everything possible, the event was organized in collaboration with several sport federations and other organizations: Eliseu and Dili Zumba Lovers, KOICA and the Timor-Leste Taekwondo Federation, Timor-Leste Karate Federation, Timor-Leste Athletics Federation, Timor-Leste Kempo Federation, Timor-Leste Silat Federation, Timor-Leste Tennis Federation with the Kids Tennis project, Timor-Leste Youth for Peace, Action for Change Foundation, Juventude Santa Rafaela Maria, and ChildFund.

The event included education and health elements, such as fighting smoking inside the Stadium and promoting responsible behaviors regarding garbage. SportImpact is looking for partners who would like to introduce other activities in future events.

Besides this event, during the week of March 23 to 27^th SportImpact also organized in Dili a course on “Sport Event Management”, where sport managers learned methods for planning and organizing events like the one on March 28^th.

In the next few months SportImpact intends to take this project to eight other Timor-Leste municipalities: Liquiçá in April, Ermera in May, Manatuto in June, Lautém in July, Bobonaro in August, Aileu in September, Baucau in October and Oecusse in November.

According to SportImpact, the budget available for this project is very limited, as it has not yet received any financial support. “We thank particularly the support from AICEP Portugal Global – Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade of Portugal, through an intern from the INOV Contacto program who has integrated the team for six months. For this event we appreciate the support from all co-organizers and volunteers, as well as from the Timor-Leste State, who allowed the use of the Dili Municipal Stadium available, from One World Play Project, who offered ‘indestructible’ footballs through ChildFund, from Timor Telecom, who provided the sound system and supported event communications, from the Secretary of State for Profesional Training and Employment Policy, who provided tents, from Sport Dili e Benfica, who supplied several materials, and from sapo.tl, who covered and promoted the event”.

Nuno Delicado appealed to financial support: “We are actively looking for partners and sponsors to enable the financial sustainability of these initiatives. We appreciate if companies and entities who value the project’s objectives and messages get in touch.”

The United Nations General Assembly declared April 6th as International Day of Sport for Peace and Development, to raise awareness about the potential of sport as a tool to contribute to the United Nations objectives of peace and development. A SportImpact reúne centenas de crianças em Dili para celebrar o
Dia Internacional do Desporto para a Paz e Desenvolvimento

No sábado, 28 de março, a SportImpact celebrou o Dia Internacional do Desporto para a Paz e Desenvolvimento com um evento multi-desporto no Estádio Municipal de Dili, Timor-Leste.

Centenas de crianças e jovens das escolas de Dili, e dezenas de adultos, puderam experimentar gratuitamente 12 desportos e atividades diferentes: atletismo, badminton, basquetebol, futebol, ginástica, karaté, kempo, silat, taekwondo, ténis, voleibol e zumba.

Em declarações à imprensa, Nuno Delicado, diretor da SportImpact, explicou que o principal objetivo do evento foi promover o desporto como ferramenta de desenvolvimento humano e de promoção da paz. “Este foi um evento histórico em Timor-Leste. Nunca antes se tinham reunido tantas atividades desportivas num só lugar. É inclusive um projeto inovador a nível mundial. As atividades desportivas não eram competitivas e não havia vencedores nem prémios, promovendo o desporto para todos e incentivando as pessoas a experimentarem e talvez decidirem começar a praticar novos desportos”.

Demonstrando que com boa-vontade, colaboração e determinação tudo é possível, o evento foi organizado em colaboração com várias federações desportivas e outras organizações: Eliseu e Zumba Lovers de Dili, Federação de Taekwondo de Timor-Leste e KOICA, Federação de Karaté de Timor-Leste, Federação de Atletismo de Timor-Leste, Federação de Kempo de Timor-Leste, Federação de Silat de Timor-Leste, Federação de Ténis de Timor-Leste com o projeto Kids Tennis, Timor-Leste Youth for Peace, Action for Change Foundation, Juventude Santa Rafaela Maria e ChildFund.

O evento incluiu elementos de educação e saúde: combater o tabagismo dentro do Estádio e promover comportamentos responsáveis em relação ao lixo. A SportImpact procura parceiros que queiram incluir outras atividades em futuros eventos.

Além do evento, durante a semana de 23 a 27 de março a SportImpact organizou também em Dili uma formação sobre “Gestão de Eventos Desportivos”, em que os dirigentes desportivos aprenderam métodos para planear e organizar eventos como o de 28 de março.

Nos próximos meses, a SportImpact pretende levar este projeto a oito outros municípios de Timor-Leste: Liquiçá em Abril, Ermera em maio, Manatuto em junho, Lautém em julho, Bobonaro em agosto, Aileu em setembro, Baucau em outubro e Oecusse em novembro.

Segundo a SportImpact, o orçamento disponível para este projeto é muito limitado, por não terem até agora recebido apoios financeiros. “Agradecemos especialmente o apoio da AICEP Portugal Global – Agência para o Investimento e Comércio Externo de Portugal, através de um estagiário do programa INOV Contacto que integrou a equipa por seis meses.
