‘VerdeOlympics’ alumni, replicated the multi-sport event in Tarrafal

25 alumni of VerdeOlympics in the municipality of Ribeira Brava, together with 7 new volunteers, replicated what they learned and organized a multi-sport event in the municipality of Tarrafal.

SportImpact and the Cabo Verde Olympic Committee organized on Saturday, April 23rd (click here for press release), in São Nicolau an edition of ‘VerdeOlympics’ consisting of a 5-day workshop “Sport Administration, with major in Organization of Sport Events” and a final event. During ‘VerdeOlympics’ participants were stimulated to empower themselves to pursue their projects and dreams instead of just waiting for external support.  Due to restrictions of funding, this initiative is being implemented only in the capital of each island and alumni of ‘VerdeOlympics’ in Ribeira Brava felt they had the duty to replicate the final event to give the opportunity of trying new sports and having new experiences for the kids of the second city of São Nicolau island – Tarrafal

Showing that goodwill, collaboration and determination make everything possible, this event replication was organized solely by former participants of VerdeOlympics, that built their sport equipment and raised support from local organizations such as the city hall of Tarrafal, Youth Center and the local Educational Delegation, without any participation and contribution of SportImpact or Cabo Verde Olympic Committee.

Another important lesson to keep from this historical event is that locals are the best experts in the world on how to operate in their own regions. The local organizers succeeded excellently in engaging all the relevant stakeholders towards a common goal and reached the participation of 1332 children, beating the world record of children taking part in a Sport for Life event.

In statements to SportImpact, former participant, Pedro Morais, said “this initiative [VerdeOlympics] was determinant to unite us as a family and we thank SportImpact and Cabo Verde Olympic Committee for giving us this boost that will serve us as a starter for improving our future initiatives.”

Pedro Morais proceeded by elucidating about his source of inspiration “what inspires us to continue doing more and better is the joy in the face of the children during the events. Additionally, the organizers know that we are also sending a powerful message to the crowd – they saw the real proof during the event and now believe that it’s possible to do a lot using few resources!”

Alumni Arsenia Cruz leaves a call to action “my challenge to every people is to keep bringing the Olympic spirit to the children’s lives and to continue this wonderful movement”. SportImpact is actively looking for partners and financial support to make this viable.

About São Nicolau

São Nicolau is one of the remotest areas of Cabo Verde, with around 13,000 inhabitants has only two municipalities, Ribeira Brava and Tarrafal. The 26 km road that separates the two cities represents a unique beauty that takes almost one hour to accomplish, due to the territory’ s irregularities.

 About ‘VerdeOlympics’

The ‘VerdeOlympics’ program is a ‘Sport for Life’ initiative based on the key lessons learned by SportImpact in Timor-Leste and adapted to Cabo Verde’s reality. The program is being implemented in partnership with the Cabo Verde Olympic Committee. Other stakeholders are engaged and contributing actively to the project, such as the Cabo Verde Ministry of Sport & Education through the General Directorate for Sport and local schools, the Cabo Verde Ministry of Youth through Youth Centers and the Institute for Children and Adolescents, NGO SOS Children’s Villages, national sport federations and associations, among others.

The project is being implemented with two simultaneous teams in order to cover the whole country before the Olympic Day (June 23^rd), where the program’s alumni will be fully responsible for organizing another ‘VerdeOlympics’ event in their region, to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894.
