Press release – Over six hundred children gathered to play sports in Aileu
PRESS RELEASE
Dili, Timor-Leste · Wednesday, 07 October 2015
SportImpact organized on Saturday, October 03, in Aileu,
the 9th edition of ‘Sport for Life’
At the 9th edition of ‘Sport for Life’ over six hundred children and youngsters in Aileu experienced 11 different sports: athletics, badminton, basketball, beach tennis, boxing, dance, football, table tennis, traditional games, volleyball and zumba.
For the first time, the event was covered by Timor-Leste national television (RTTL), which transmitted three news pieces on Monday and Tuesday after the event, highlighting the project’s focus on building participants creativity to find local solutions to their needs.
The Timor-Leste Athletics Federation had a special participation, bringing several internationally certified coaches to facilitate ‘Kids Athletics‘ – a series of games and exercises – for fun but also talent identification – including sprints, jumps, throws and different drills.
The event was co-organized with 32 participants of a five-day workshop at the Aileu Youth Center on “Guide for Organizing Sport Events”. During the workshop the participants were stimulated by SportImpact facilitators to empower themselves to pursue their projects and dreams instead of just waiting for external support. Inspired by Peace and Sport’s Adapted Sport Manual, they built sport equipment for the event from local materials and recycled garbage, overcoming the lack of official (and expensive) equipment.
Unfortunately, SportImpact intends to shutdown the ‘Sport for Life’ program at end of the year due to lack of funding (just $7,281 to date). In 2016 SportImpact had envisioned replicating the initiative around Timor-Leste, ensuring a legacy of continued sport practice and human development through local sport clubs and associations. SportImpact is actively looking for partners and financial support that could make this viable.
SportImpact thanks in particular World Vision for logistical support for three municipalities, UNESCO for financial support to four municipalities, MOVE – Catholic University of Portugal for committed volunteers, Peace and Sport for creating and sharing the Adapted Sport Manual, and the One World Play Project, for ‘indestructible’ footballs through ChildFund. For this event SportImpact appreciates the support from all co-organizers and volunteers from Timor-Leste Athletics Federation, Timor-Leste Sport Confederation, Timor-Leste National Youth Council, Youth Centre of Aileu, Jovem Ba Kristu, Peace House (Uma Dame), local schools, among others.
About the event “Sport For Life”
The “Sport for Life” event is co-organized by SportImpact with as many local groups and organizations as possible, to offer to kids, the youth and the public in general the opportunity to try a variety of sports in one place (typically a local major football field or stadium if available). We invite all the schools in the region to bring their kids. The objective is to show that a large infrastructure is not necessary to implement these events and to encourage local groups and associations to organize similar initiatives in the future.
These events also include health and education components (on non-smoking and no littering). SportImpact is looking for partners who can see the events as a good channel and may want to enrich them with their own contents.
In the coming months, thanks to support from UNESCO, SportImpact is taking Sport for Life to the remaining four municipalities, completing the whole country:
