‘Sport for Life’ Celebrating The International Day of Sport For Peace and Development
PRESS RELEASE
Dili, Timor-Leste · Friday, 29 April 2016
SportImpact organized Sport for Life
in Motael (Dili) to Celebrate the International
Day of Sport for Peace and Development
At the two first editions of ‘Sport for Life’ this year in Timor-Leste over 400 children and youngsters in Motael (Dili) experienced 13 different sports.
These events were co-organized with 40 youth graduates of two workshops on “Guide for Organizing Sport Events” (the first on March 15-18 and the second on April 4-9), from several groups and organizations including Motael Youth, Timor-Leste National Youth Council, Permatil, Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosae, Sport Dili e Benfica, and Becora Youth Centre. During the workshops the participants empowered themselves to pursue their projects and dreams without depending on external support. Inspired by Peace and Sport’s Adapted Sport Manual, they built sport equipment for the events from local materials and recycled garbage.
The April edition was full of “firsts”:
- First time with volunteer workshop co-facilitators (who had taken part in the March workshop and were trained by SportImpact coordinator)
- First time with co-organizers with disabilities
- First time with NGOs contributing directly with their educational messages in the event: Red Cross Timor-Leste teaching about First Aid, Aliansa Nasional Kontra Tabaku teaching about health promotion and problems arising from smoking, and PermaScouts teaching about permaculture. (SportImpact invites all NGOs to share their relevant messages, taking advantage of hundreds of kids having fun and being receptive to new messages and activities.)

About ‘Sport for Life’ 2016 in Timor-Leste
In 2015, SportImpact, made a call for action to make the next stage of ‘Sport for Life’ in Timor-Leste viable. Given our deep passion and commitment to human development through sport, despite having received zero funding for the project, instead of shutting down we designed a plan with a budget close to $0, no international staff, no trips to municipalities, and other measures.
The next stage of ‘Sport for Life’ is legacy and replication. In 2015 we ran workshops and events in all municipalities of Timor-Leste. In 2016 we are training facilitators from all municipalities (chosen from the best participants in 2015), who will facilitate workshops in sub-municipalities (posto administrativo). In the future they will train facilitators who will then run the project at suku/village level. SportImpact is actively looking for partners and financial support to make this viable.
